DDD: How to Define Bounded Contexts in Your Web Development Project

What are Bounded Contexts?

Bounded Contexts are a part of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) that helps us to break down complex systems into smaller, manageable pieces. They let you focus on a specific part of the domain without getting lost in the complexity of the whole system.

How to Define Bounded Contexts:

  1. Understand your domain: Start by getting a clear understanding of your project’s domain. Identify the main components, and how they interact with each other. You can do this by talking to stakeholders or domain experts.

  2. Identify subdomains: Break down the main domain into smaller subdomains. Subdomains are smaller, more focused areas of your application that have a specific purpose or function. For example, if you’re working on an e-commerce website, some subdomains could be User Management, Product Catalog, and Order Processing.

  3. Define Bounded Contexts for each subdomain: Now, create a Bounded Context for each subdomain you identified. Each Bounded Context should have its own set of models, services, and logic that are specific to that context. You might find that some subdomains can be further broken down into smaller Bounded Contexts. In our e-commerce example, the Product Catalog subdomain might have Bounded Contexts like Product Listing and Product Detail.

  4. Establish relationships between Bounded Contexts: Identify how each Bounded Context interacts with the others. For example, the Order Processing Bounded Context might need to access the Product Catalog to verify product availability. You can use concepts like Shared Kernel, Customer-Supplier, or Anti-Corruption Layer to define these relationships.

  5. Define communication between Bounded Contexts: Decide on how Bounded Contexts will communicate with each other. You can use REST APIs, message queues, or other communication methods depending on your project’s needs.

  6. Create a visual representation: It’s helpful to create a diagram or map of your Bounded Contexts and their relationships. This can help you and your team better understand the overall structure of your project.
